Vehicle registrations & electrification

The dynamics of mobility electrification: the share of electric vehicles in new and used registrations (passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, buses and coaches), and disparities across departments.

Pick a segment view below: your choice recomposes the whole page (only the sections relevant to that segment are shown). Vehicles in use stay available in the ‘All segments’ and ‘Passenger cars’ views.

Source: SDES - Immatriculations de véhicules routiers (API DiDo)

Actual granularity: annual. ANNUAL, not monthly: the SDES source (municipal registrations) exposes only a single current edition vintage, with annual volumes at the municipal level, and no monthly breakdown.

Monthly momentum (France)

The annual module above smooths the whole year. The Avere-France barometer publishes the plug-in market share every month (passenger cars and light commercial vehicles). Recent trends read more finely there.

Manual entry: With no open, machine-readable monthly French source available, this series is entered by hand from the Avere-France barometers (PDFs kept in the repository for audit).

Fuel mix shift (new vehicles)

Fuel composition of new registrations for the selected segment, as a 100% stacked share. New vehicles are the frontier of electrification: this is where the electric share progresses fastest, at the expense of diesel then petrol.

PC & LCV orders (CCFA/CSIAM barometer)

Monthly orders of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in France since January 2018. A leading indicator of registrations: the order book precedes deliveries by several months. A distinct metric from registrations (an order can be cancelled or delivered later).

Choropleth map: the darker the department, the higher the segment's electric share.

Source: Ecolab (CGDD) - Part des véhicules électriques et hydrogène dans les immatriculations, par segment. “Electric and hydrogen” share of the segment's new registrations, by department (Ecolab/CGDD, derived from RSVéRo). The national figure is the sum of departments; vintage and definitions may differ slightly from the annual SDES module above.

EV fleet in circulation (stock)

Registrations measure the flow (vehicles put on the road each year); the fleet measures the stock (all vehicles in circulation on 1 January). The electric share of the fleet rises more slowly than that of registrations, as the fleet takes time to turn over.
