Public transport: network-level detail
Modal shares stop at broad families. These three sheets go one level down: metro and suburban rail separately, high-speed and regional trains separately, air travel by destination.
Detail of collective passenger transport modes: urban networks (Paris region and rest of France), rail (high-speed, intercity, regionally contracted trains, Paris-region commuter rail) and air demand by geographic corridor. Mainland France for F2.a and F3, whole of France for F4.a.

Urban public transport
The Paris region accounts for close to three quarters of French urban public transport, and its rail modes alone for more than the rest of the country combined. The series are stacked because they genuinely decompose the total.

Rail passenger transport
The longest series in the module: 1980 to 2024. Missing early values are not zeros: SDES only publishes these breakdowns from the late 1990s onwards.

A line apart: train movements
The same table publishes a seventh line in a different unit: train movements, in millions de trains-kilomètres. It measures supply rather than use, and is therefore never added to the passenger-kilometres above.

Air travel demand
By geographic route. The series are overlaid rather than stacked: mainland–overseas traffic is counted in both the mainland and the overseas totals, which is why the published "Total France" is lower than their sum.

Scope and caveats
- Mainland France for urban and rail transport, whole of France for air. The three sheets have their own years and their own units: they do not add up together.
- F3 mixes two units in the same table: the first six rows are in passenger-kilometres, “Total train movements” is in train-kilometres. That row is isolated (`otherUnit: true`) and its unit read from its own label; it is never summed with the others.
- In F4.a, “Total France” is not the sum of the mainland and overseas totals: Mainland–Overseas traffic must be counted only once. The build checks that the published total stays below that sum, and fails if the gap disappears.
- Mainland–Overseas traffic is counted in the mainland total AND in the overseas total: these two totals do not form a tree, which is precisely why “Total France” is lower than their sum. Overseas rows are therefore published without a parent rather than forced into a hierarchy that does not exist.
- Some values in the latest year are not measurements: the workbook notes flag an outer Paris-region figure carried over from the previous year and a rest-of-France figure estimated by SDES. The notes are republished as they stand with each sheet.
- Overall modal shares (cars, two-wheelers, collective modes, air) are on the Domestic passenger transport page, which reads sheet F1 of the same chapter.
